Fatigue and Hormones: Navigating Energy Changes During Menopause
But why am I soo tired?
Hormones play a leading role in our lives. For folks assigned female at birth (AFAB), there are three major phases of hormonal change: puberty, pregnancy, and perimenopause into menopause. These transitions shape not only our physical health but also our emotional and mental wellbeing. Let’s explore how these phases interconnect and why empathy and support are essential, especially during menopause.
Hormonal Changes and the Brain
Think back to the teenage years—remember the emotional rollercoaster of puberty? We understood that it was a natural part of growth and hopefully look at teenagers experiencing this empathy. The same holds true during pregnancy when hormonal shifts can significantly impact mood, energy, and cognition.
Now consider perimenopause and menopause. The hormonal fluctuations happening in this phase although linked to the reproductive system can cause profound effects on our brain and the rest of our body. Fatigue, mood changes, and even brain fog can stem directly from these changes. Sleep problems often exacerbate these issues, making everyday life even harder to manage. Empathy and support are just as vital during this phase as during the earlier ones, so yes people have gone through menopause, but it’s great that people are talking about it more and helps us understand that we can do things to improve out experience.
Clearing Up Misconceptions
Some people navigate menopause without significant challenges, but for many, it’s a tough journey. And here’s the crucial point: it’s not about how "healthy" your lifestyle is. While certain lifestyle changes can help ease symptoms, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution or guarantee. Just as with pregnancy, everyone’s experience is unique. There’s no blame or shame here—just an opportunity to understand and support one another.
Recalibrating for Resilience
The good news is that you can help yourself. Small, intentional adjustments in nutrition, movement, and lifestyle can make a big difference. It’s about recalibrating to meet your body where it is right now. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s progress and support.
